These luxurious leather and soft, supple suede trainers,  by Jimmy Choo, featuring glamorous gold eyelets and striking star-printed soles are perfect for chic run-around days. Especially this model low rise in this beige color caught my eye ....

Christmas book gifts

Here are some of the books on my wishlist, maybe you'll like them as well?

The End of the Game, by Peter Beard.
Beard lived in Kenya in the 1960s, bought land next to his friend Isak Dinesen (who wrote the memoir Out of Africa) and wrote and photographed wildlife, especially elephants. A fashion photographer (he discovered Iman in Africa), as well as a writer and visual artist, Beard takes his readers on a safari without leaving home.

Focusing on the widespread destruction of the African elephant, in 'The End of the Game' Beard tells of the enterprisers, explorers, missionaries, and big-game hunters whose quests for progress and adventure were to change the face of Africa for ever.

These include Theodore Roosevelt; Ernest Hemingway; Denys Finch-Hatton, the romantic hero of Out of Africa; legendary game warden J.A.Hunter; and railway engineer J.H.Patterson, who became famous as the pursuer of the "Man-Eating Lions of Tsavo." The End of the Game is a classic work, one that explores the intricate and complex relationship between man and animals and how both struggle to adapt to their changing environments. It is not always a happy story. But it is an important one. The End of the Game is not a book you will soon forget.

It is too late to undo what has been done.

The laws of inevitability which have ruled Africa for millions of years must now be accepted by Africa's conquerors. To understand this is to begin to realize that we have conquered nothing at all. Man and his ways have intruded with little regard for Africa's customs and privacy. She has been pursued and despoiled. The End of the Game tells part of this story because it deals with the essence of African life, the animal. And with that very license of humanity by which we have presumed to conquer, we are challenged to reflect upon our defeat.

"The ruined wood we used to know won't cry for retribution - the men who have destroyed it will accomplish its revenge "
- William Faulkner -

Take Ivy by Powerhouse Books
The first American printing of the seminal Japanese book, which captured 60's Ivy League style long before it went mass market.

Baked Explorations
The Red Hook, Brooklyn bakery's claim to fame may be its brownie (Oprah's favorite), but every recipe in the book (from caramel apple cake to chocolate salt to pepper sandwich cookies) turns out perfectly—and the lush photos are enough to give you a toothache.

Jean-Michel Basquiat by Glenn O'Brien
Constantly referenced by artists and designers alike, Jean-Michel Basquiat—the dreadlocked graffiti artist who died in 1988—left an indelible mark in just 27 too-short years. This book (by, among others, GQ Style Guy Glenn O'Brien) celebrates Basquiat's legacy, with works, essays, and commentary by those who knew the artist.

Kate Moss by Mario Testino
A behemoth collection dedicated to the willowy supermodel that might weigh more than she does.

Not really a book, but a subscription :) Anthology Magazine, a cool new shelter mag founded by two Bay Area design obsessives.

INFLUENCERS!

INFLUENCERS is a short documentary that explores what it means to be an influencer and how trends and creativity become contagious today in music, fashion and entertainment.

The film attempts to understand the essence of influence, what makes a person influential without taking a statistical or metric approach.

Written and Directed by Paul Rojanathara and Davis Johnson, the film is a Polaroid snapshot of New York influential creatives (advertising, design, fashion and entertainment) who are shaping today's pop culture.
"Influencers" belongs to the new generation of short films, webdocs, which combine the documentary style and the online experience.

DIRECTORS’ NOTE
INFLUENCERS focuses on what is commonly referred to as “Lifestyle Culture or Influential Young Adults Market” in the areas of music, fashion, and entertainment.
The documentary does not pretend to offer an analysis of what is influence under all its forms (economic, political, environmental…).

What prompted us to put together this crossover project (film + online experience) was to understand the essence of influence, what makes a person influential without taking a statistical or metric approach.
Obviously, trends are never the product of one individual but rather the result of factors that involve various people…

We therefore set out to meet some of these industry insiders and pioneers
who, despite working in the background, literally define mainstream culture.

We asked them to share their views on:
How to define influence? What makes someone influent? What is the link between trends and influence? Are there places/events conducive to creative pollination?
They spontaneously shared their professional and personal experiences.

In the background, the documentary also explores an entire ecosystem of DIY (Do It Yourself) minded individuals whose passion is transforming Pop Culture.
Their creations have produced powerful independent media that became the main news source for many readers and creatives entrepreneurs around the world.

The about 13 minutes short film, was written and directed by Paul Johnson and Davis Rojanathara on an original concept of R+I Creative.

Valentino for GAP

The parka, the T- shirt, the hoodie and even cargo pants have been given the Valentino touch in a new capsule collection for the Gap in Europe.

If you like ruffles, this is the line for you. Valentino has taken the line's signature flower-like ruffles and flounces off evening gowns and luxury handbags and put them on casual clothing. The results are beautiful if perhaps a little over-the-top. Vogue UK has images of the seven-piece collection, which was launched to celebrate the opening of Gap's first Italian store last week in Milan.

The line will also be sold at Gap in London and at Colette in Paris but isn't expected to jump the pond. The line is just the latest in a series of high/low collaborations including the recent H&M Lanvin line.

Dunhill's Luxury Adventure Tour

Famed London luxury goods firm Dunhill is collaborating with UK adventure travel firm Black Tomato on a new series of excursions replicating a famed Dunhill journey in 1930. In that year Dunhill's Clement Court traveled overland from Paris to Japan to secure the very finest Japanese lacquered goods for the firm. Dunhill and Black Tomato are now offering modern versions of Court's epic journey, with appropriately luxurious accommodations and adventuresome activities along the way. The excursions are designed to demonstrate that "luxury is something more discerning, more elusive and more unique than just a price tag", as they put it.

The concept of discovery and exploration has been a hallmark of the Dunhill brand since 1893, as reflected in its most recent collections. The luxury packages are priced from about $4,500 and include destinations such as Paris, Moscow, Mongolia and Japan. Experiences include a private tour of the Louvre in Paris while the museum is closed, a flight in a Russian fighter jet above Moscow, learning eagle hunting in Mongolia (above) and bathing in Japan's oldest mineral hot springs. Guests can also opt to recreate Court's entire journey, including 10 days in a private cabin on the Golden Eagle Trans Siberian railway, starting at about $44,000.

Bowler Hat, by Nick Veasey

"We live in a world obsessed with image. What we look like, what our clothes look like, houses, cars...I like to counter this obsession with superficial appearance by using X-rays to strip back the layers and show what it is like under the surface. Often the integral beauty adds intrigue to the familiar. We all make assumptions based on the external visual aspects of what surrounds us and we are attracted to people and forms that are aesthetically pleasing. I like to challenge this automatic way that we react to just physical appearance by highlighting the, often surprising, inner beauty."
